This directory lists baking and pastry programs in every U.S. state. Each state page shows the schools we have verified, the credentials they award, and what each is estimated to cost, with a link to a full profile for every school.
Choose a state below, or start with our top baking schools by category if you are not sure where to begin. A few states have no college baking credential. Their pages say so plainly and point to the nearest options.
Schools by State
Online Schools
Most baking programs need campus kitchens, but a few schools teach baking coursework online, with students baking at home and finishing with an in-person externship. Our online baking schools page compares five online programs, including Auguste Escoffier School of Culinary Arts, the Institute of Culinary Education, and Pima Community College, and nine hybrid programs that combine online classes with labs on campus.
National and Multi-Campus Schools
Some culinary schools teach baking and pastry at campuses in more than one state. Our national and multi-campus schools page covers Auguste Escoffier School of Culinary Arts, The Culinary Institute of America, Johnson & Wales University, and the Institute of Culinary Education, with the programs, campuses, and costs for each.
Compare Schools
The table below lists every school profiled in the directory with its location, programs, and format. Tuition figures are estimates taken from each profile. They rest on different bases from state to state, so open the profile to see what a figure includes.

How to Compare Baking Schools
Baking programs differ more than their names suggest. These are the points worth checking on every profile before you apply.
Check What the Credential Is
A baking or pastry certificate, diploma, or degree has baking or pastry in its title and a curriculum built around bakeshop courses. A culinary arts program may include only one or two baking courses. Our pages keep the two apart and label culinary programs with baking coursework as such. To browse by credential, see certificate programs, associate degree programs, and bachelor’s degree programs.
Compare Costs on the Same Basis
Community colleges charge residents of their own district, county, or state far less than other students, and some bill by contact hour instead of by credit. Program fees, lab fees, uniforms, and tool kits are usually extra. Each profile says how its estimate was calculated and lists the costs it leaves out. Our guide on how to pay for baking school covers aid and scholarships.
Look at the Hands-On Experience
Ask where students bake for real customers. Many programs run a student bakery, cafe, or restaurant, and most degrees include an internship or externship. A few offer paid cooperative work or a registered apprenticeship. Profiles list these, with hours where the school publishes them.
Check Accreditation and What It Covers
Institutional accreditation applies to the whole school. Some programs also state accreditation by the American Culinary Federation Education Foundation, and it may cover a degree but not a short certificate at the same college. We report accreditation only as the school states it, so confirm current status with the school or the accreditor.
Ask About Entry Requirements and Schedule
Some programs start once a year, cap enrollment, or require a food safety course before the first lab. Others admit students every term with only a college application. Our baking school requirements guide explains what schools commonly ask for.
Be Careful With Outcome Claims
Schools report graduation, job placement, and salary figures in different ways, and we cannot verify them, so we leave them out. If a school quotes a placement rate, ask how it is calculated and which graduates it counts. Our methodology explains how we choose and describe programs.
