Arizona Baking Schools and Pastry Programs

Arizona has five public colleges with baking or pastry credentials and one private culinary school with baking options. Most are short certificates of 17 to 29 credits, taught in the Phoenix area, Tucson, Sierra Vista, and Bullhead City. Scottsdale Community College offers the state’s only baking associate degree at a public college.

Resident tuition at the public colleges is about $96 to $103 per credit, so tuition for a certificate usually comes to between $1,600 and $3,000 before course fees. Lab and course fees vary widely and can add several hundred to more than a thousand dollars, so compare them along with tuition.

Which Arizona Baking Program May Fit You?

Earn a Short Baking Certificate

Cochise College in Sierra Vista (17 credits), Estrella Mountain Community College in Avondale and Scottsdale Community College (18–20 credits), and Mohave College in Bullhead City (20 credits) offer baking certificates that take about two semesters and include little or no general education.

Earn a Baking Associate Degree

Scottsdale Community College offers the 60-credit Baking and Pastry Arts AAS, which adds advanced pastry, food costing, general education, and business electives to the certificate’s baking courses.

Study Evenings While Working

Scottsdale‘s baking labs met on weeknight evenings in the 2026–27 schedule, and most of Estrella Mountain‘s met on two weekday evenings. Arizona Culinary Institute also runs its diploma on an evening schedule.

Study Online

Pima Community College in Tucson says its 29-credit Baking and Pastry Arts Certificate can be completed entirely online through PimaOnline, as well as on campus. Three of its ten culinary courses had only in-person sections in fall 2026, so confirm online availability first. See the online baking schools page for more options.

Train at a Private Culinary School

Arizona Culinary Institute in Scottsdale offers an eight-week avocational baking course and an accredited diploma that combines two baking blocks with cooking and restaurant management.

Certificate or Associate Degree?

Certificates

Arizona baking certificates run 17 to 29 credits and focus on kitchen courses such as bread, pastry, cake decorating, and confections. Arizona colleges often call them Certificates of Completion (CCL). Several colleges do not say whether a short certificate qualifies for federal aid on its own, so ask the financial aid office before enrolling.

Associate Degree

Scottsdale’s Baking and Pastry Arts AAS is the only baking-titled degree at an Arizona public college. Elsewhere, students who want a degree usually continue into a culinary arts or hospitality AAS, where only some baking courses may count.

Private Diplomas and Avocational Courses

Arizona Culinary Institute’s diploma is a career program that is eligible for federal aid, while its avocational baking course is a short, non-vocational option paid for out of pocket. Private school credits may not transfer to a community college.

Tuition and Additional Costs

Each Arizona community college district sets its own tuition. For 2026–27, resident rates are $96 per credit at Cochise, $97 in the Maricopa district (Estrella Mountain and Scottsdale), $98 at Mohave, and $103 at Pima. Out-of-state rates run from $258 to $372 per credit, though Mohave and Cochise offer reduced Western Undergraduate Exchange rates and Pima has a lower rate for fully online courses.

Baking students should also budget for:

  • Course and lab fees, from about $20 to $400 per course depending on the college
  • Uniforms, knife and baking tool kits
  • A food handler card or ServSafe certification
  • Textbooks and supplies
  • Transportation and living expenses

Programs No Longer Listed

Central Arizona College and Yavapai College no longer list their baking and pastry certificates in their 2026–27 catalogs; both now offer culinary arts certificates that include baking courses. Phoenix College is no longer listed as a location for the Maricopa district’s baking certificate. Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Scottsdale closed in 2017, and the Art Institute of Phoenix closed in 2018. Arizona Western College and Tohono O’odham Community College offer culinary programs without a baking-titled credential.

Questions to Ask Before Applying

  • What course fees, uniforms, and tool kits are required, and what do they cost?
  • Is the certificate eligible for Pell Grants or other federal aid?
  • Are labs held during the day or in the evening?
  • Will my certificate courses count toward an associate degree later?
  • If I want to study online, which courses have online sections and how are labs completed?
