What Each Option Offers

Central Vermont Career Center

The Baking Arts program in Barre is a one-year, full-time high school career and technical program in which students work in an off-campus bake shop. Students can earn ServSafe Manager and allergen credentials and dual-enrollment credits from White Mountains Community College in New Hampshire: 3 credits for Baking Fundamentals and 5 for Food Service Sanitation.

Adults can apply and are admitted when space is available. The center does not publish adult hours, schedules, or tuition, so contact it directly. The $7,500 figure comes from the state’s MyFutureVT career listing, which marks it as approximate.

King Arthur Baking School

The King Arthur Baking School in Norwich teaches non-credit classes for home and experienced bakers. A typical single class, such as a 3-hour bagel class, costs $120. Multi-day intensives run $575 to $825; a 4-day artisan bread class is listed at $700. Classes are sold one at a time and do not lead to a certificate or degree.

Hospitality Programs

Vermont State University offers a bachelor’s degree in resort and hospitality management, and the University of Vermont offers a hospitality management certificate. Neither includes a baking credential. The Community College of Vermont has no culinary or baking program.

Earning a Baking Credential in a Neighboring State

The New England Regional Student Program, also called Tuition Break, lets residents of one New England state enroll in approved programs at public colleges in the other five at a reduced rate, capped at 175 percent of the in-state rate. Community colleges take part, and eligibility is set program by program, so check the program finder on the New England Board of Higher Education’s website before applying.

For 2026–27, New Hampshire’s community colleges charge $357 per credit at the regional rate, compared with $238 for New Hampshire residents and $523 for other out-of-state students. White Mountains Community College in Berlin lists a Baking and Pastry Arts associate degree of 61 to 62 credits. Massachusetts community colleges set their regional rate at 150 percent of the resident tuition component.

See the New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York pages for verified baking programs, costs, and profiles. Maine has culinary programs that include baking coursework. New York is not part of the New England program, so its colleges charge Vermont residents regular non-resident rates.

A few schools teach baking coursework online, with students baking at home and finishing with an in-person externship. The online baking schools page lists those programs.

Apprenticeship

The Vermont Department of Labor’s list of apprenticeable occupations, dated 2020, includes Baker as a 6,000-hour, time-based apprenticeship. The list names occupations, not employers, so anyone interested needs an employer willing to sponsor an apprenticeship. Contact the department’s apprenticeship office for current information.

Programs No Longer Listed

The New England Culinary Institute in Montpelier announced in December 2020 that it would end its credit programs, and its last students finished in spring 2021.

  • If I am an adult applying to a career center program, how many hours is it and what does it cost?
