Baking and Pastry Program Options

All three credentials appear in the Division of Professional and Technical Services section of the Columbus Tech catalog, next to the Culinary Arts diploma and degree. The college’s September 2026 programs list still includes all three baking codes.

Culinary Baking and Pastry Arts Degree

The Culinary Baking and Pastry Arts Degree is a 66-credit associate program. It requires Composition and Rhetoric, one course each in social or behavioral sciences, mathematics, and humanities or fine arts, and a general core elective.

The occupational block matches the diploma: computer literacy, culinary fundamentals, safety and sanitation, a cooking option, the full baking and pastry sequence, and a leadership course chosen from Principles in Culinary Leadership or Leadership.

Culinary Baking and Pastry Arts Diploma

The Culinary Baking and Pastry Arts Diploma totals 59 credits. In place of college-level general education, it uses applied basic skills courses: a math course, an English course, and Basic Psychology.

The catalog describes the diploma as preparation for work as a baker or pastry chef, using international and classical techniques that range from bread baking to showpieces.

Baking and Pastry Specialist Technical Certificate of Credit

The Baking and Pastry Specialist TCC requires 25 credits: Foundations of Mathematics, Culinary Safety and Sanitation, Baking Principles, Advanced Baking Principles, Culinary Nutrition and Menu Development, and six credits of cooking coursework.

Its math, sanitation, baking principles, and cooking courses also appear in the baking diploma. Advanced Baking Principles and Culinary Nutrition and Menu Development do not, so certificate holders who continue should ask how those credits will be applied.

Curriculum and Baking Courses

Across the three credentials, the catalog lists culinary and baking courses including:

  • Baking Principles and Advanced Baking Principles
  • Baking Science
  • European Cakes and Tortes, and Cake Design and Decorating
  • Artisan and Specialty Bread
  • Hot and Cold Plated Desserts
  • Confection Artistry and Chocolate Artistry
  • Dessert and Bread Retail Production, Nutrition in Baking
  • Principles of Cooking, or Foundations of Cooking Principles and Techniques

Students choose between one six-credit cooking course and two three-credit cooking courses. An advisor can explain which option fits the schedule and which leadership course applies.

Tuition and Additional Costs

Columbus Tech’s fee schedule effective Fall 2026 sets tuition at $107 per credit in-state and $214 per credit out-of-state, plus eight mandatory fees that total $421 per semester. The catalog does not state program length, so these estimates assume five semesters for the degree, four for the diploma, and two for the certificate:

ProgramCreditsEstimated in-state tuition and feesEstimated out-of-state tuition and fees
Culinary Baking and Pastry Arts Degree (5 semesters assumed)66$9,167$16,229
Culinary Baking and Pastry Arts Diploma (4 semesters assumed)59$7,997$14,310
Baking and Pastry Specialist TCC (2 semesters assumed)25$3,517$6,192

These totals include only tuition and mandatory fees. Textbooks, uniforms, knives and tools, the $25 application fee, transportation, and living costs are extra. Each additional semester adds another $421 in mandatory fees.

Culinary students should also plan for program charges. The college’s FY26 program-specific fee list shows a $75 culinary arts lab fee for each lab-based class and a $30 supply fee for Baking Principles. Residents of Lee, Chambers, Russell, and Barbour counties in Alabama may qualify for in-state tuition through reciprocity. The full tuition and fee schedule lists costs by credit load.

Admissions and Financial Aid

New students complete the application, pay a $25 nonrefundable fee, and submit an official high school or high school equivalency transcript. Columbus Tech’s general admissions page lists other academic readiness paths, including prior college coursework, and explains the proof of lawful presence and Georgia residency required for in-state tuition.

According to the college’s financial aid programs page, Pell Grants are available for degree, diploma, and Pell-eligible certificate programs. The HOPE Grant applies to diploma and certificate programs, and the HOPE Scholarship applies to associate degree students who meet its GPA requirements. Columbus Tech does not participate in the federal student loan program.

Career Preparation and Transfer Considerations

According to the catalog, the certificate prepares students to work as bakery or pastry shop workers, commercial bakers, and pastry chefs. The diploma and degree add specialty work in cakes, bread, confections, and chocolate, along with leadership and retail production training.

The Culinary Baking and Pastry Arts Degree is a career-focused associate degree. Its general education courses carry standard titles such as Composition and Rhetoric and College Algebra, but students aiming for a bachelor’s degree should have the receiving institution review every course before relying on transfer credit.
