Bucks County Community College builds its baking curriculum from short, single-subject kitchen labs. Cookies, ice cream and frozen desserts, wedding cakes, chocolate, and two levels of bread each get their own one- or two-credit course, and those labs stack into a 23-credit Baking and Pastry Arts certificate and a 62-credit Baking and Pastry Arts Associate of Arts degree.
Both credentials sit in the School of Business & Legal Studies, and the college holds its culinary open houses and kitchen tours in Founders Hall on the Newtown Campus. Details below come from the 2026–27 Bucks catalog and the college’s 2026–27 tuition and fee tables.

Baking and Pastry Program Options
The 2026–27 catalog lists two baking credentials alongside a separate Culinary Arts degree and certificate. Every course in the baking certificate also appears in the degree, so the shorter program works as the first step of the longer one.
Baking and Pastry Arts, Associate of Arts
The Baking and Pastry Arts degree requires 62 credits. The recommended sequence runs 14, 14, 14, and 15 credits across four semesters, with a five-credit summer session after the first year for Culinary Internship I and Introduction to Business. Bucks classifies it as a job-ready major, designed for employment first.
Baking and Pastry Arts Certificate
The Baking and Pastry Arts Certificate totals 23 credits: ten baking labs, Safety and Sanitation, and the one-credit Orientation to College. The catalog recommends 10 credits in the first semester and 13 in the second. Bucks says completers may apply the credits toward the Baking and Pastry Arts degree.
Curriculum and Baking Courses
Baking and Decorating (CULN130) is the entry lab and the prerequisite for the chocolate, advanced pastry, and advanced cakes courses. The culinary course descriptions list these baking requirements, all shared by both credentials:
- Baking and Decorating (3 credits): cakes, cookies, pies, biscuits, muffins, breads, and gluten-free and vegan items
- Bread Fabrication, Basic and Advanced (2 credits each): sandwich and flat breads, rolls, then pre-ferments, natural starters, and artisan loaves
- Advanced Baking: Pastry and Advanced Baking: Cakes (2 credits each): pastry doughs, custards, meringues, mousses, tortes, fondant, and marzipan
- Chocolate: Essential Skills (2 credits) and Plated Desserts (2 credits)
- Wedding Cake Assembly and Decoration (2 credits), Ice Cream and Frozen Desserts (2 credits), and Cookies (1 credit)
- Safety and Sanitation (2 credits)
The degree adds Culinary Foundations, Basic Food Preparation, one four-credit culinary elective, Food Purchasing and Cost Control, Menu Planning/Costing/Design, two internships, the Culinary Capstone, and business, nutrition, and communication courses. One caution: the certificate’s web catalog table shows Plated Desserts as 1 credit, while the course description and the catalog PDF show 2. The 23-credit total only adds up with 2.
Tuition and Additional Costs
For 2026–27, Bucks charges $170 per credit for Bucks County residents, $340 for other Pennsylvania residents, and $250 for out-of-state residents. Everyone pays a $4 activity fee, a $21 college services fee, and a $37 technology support fee per credit. A capital fee adds $10 per credit for out-of-county students and $20 for out-of-state students. That works out to $232, $412, and $332 per credit. The out-of-state rate is listed below the out-of-county rate. Residents of Pennsylvania counties that sponsor no community college pay $195 plus the $10 capital fee.
| Program | Credits | Estimated in-county tuition and fees | Estimated out-of-county tuition and fees | Estimated out-of-state tuition and fees |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Baking and Pastry Arts, AA | 62 | $14,384 | $25,544 | $20,584 |
| Baking and Pastry Arts Certificate | 23 | $5,336 | $9,476 | $7,636 |
Bucks has no flat per-term fees, so these figures are credits multiplied by the per-credit totals. They leave out the one-time $75 new student fee, the $5 per credit virtual support fee on online courses, culinary course fees, books, and uniforms.
The tuition and fees page publishes 2026–27 culinary course fees: $135 for CULN130, $90 each for CULN138, 139, 151, 152, 156, 160, 165, and 285, $45 for CULN158, and $180 for CULN110 through 115. For the certificate that comes to $810. The degree adds Basic Food Preparation, the capstone, and a culinary elective for about $1,260. Course outlines require a kitchen uniform for culinary students, but the college does not publish a uniform or tool kit price.
Admissions and Financial Aid
Bucks accepts applications on a rolling basis and says any person may apply. New students complete placement testing before enrolling for fall or spring. Results guide advising and do not affect acceptance, and prior college work can earn a testing waiver. In the degree, the speech, business math, business communication, and nutrition courses carry placement requirements.
Students who plan to use financial aid need an official high school transcript or GED scores on file. The catalog states that federal Title IV aid requires enrollment in a degree or an eligible certificate program and that certificates under 16 credits do not qualify. The 23-credit baking certificate is above that line, but confirm its eligibility with the financial aid office.
Career Preparation and Transfer Considerations
Internship I and II place degree students in on-the-job training tied to their career goals, and the capstone is a supervised group production that includes concept development and menu creation. All three require permission from the School of Business & Legal Studies. Certificate students do not take an internship.
Although the degree is an Associate of Arts, Bucks cautions that transfer decisions for job-ready majors rest with the receiving institution and vary by school, and it advises contacting Transfer Services early. The catalog pages for these programs do not state American Culinary Federation accreditation.

Questions to Ask Before Applying
- Plated Desserts lists Advanced Baking: Pastry as a prerequisite, yet the certificate sequence places both in the second semester. How is that scheduled?
- Which baking labs run in fall, spring, and summer, and are evening sections available?
- What do the required uniform and any tools cost, and where are they purchased?
- Is the certificate eligible for federal and state aid at my enrollment level?
- How are internship sites arranged, and can a current bakery job count?
