How We Choose and Describe Programs
BakingSchools.org is a directory of baking and pastry programs. We do not publish a numbered ranking. Our Top Baking Schools page groups standout programs by what each does best, and every state page lists the programs we have verified.
What we include
- Programs that award a credential with baking or pastry in its title, or a culinary credential with a formally named baking and pastry option or concentration.
- Programs listed in the school’s current catalog and open to new students. Suspended, discontinued, and closed programs are removed and noted on the state page.
- Culinary programs that only include baking courses are either left out or clearly labeled as culinary programs with baking coursework.
Where our information comes from
Program details come from each school’s own catalog, program pages, and published tuition and fee schedules. When a school’s pages disagree with each other, we follow the catalog and say so on the profile. We do not use information we cannot trace to the school.
How we estimate cost
For public colleges, estimates are tuition plus the mandatory fees charged to all students, at the lowest resident rate, over the school’s published plan of study. Where no plan is published, we state the number of terms we assumed. Program, course, and lab fees, books, uniforms, tools, and living costs are listed separately when the school publishes them. For private schools we use the published program price. All figures are before financial aid.
How we choose top programs
Programs on the Top Baking Schools page are chosen from our verified profiles for strengths that a reader can check:
- Depth of baking coursework, including dedicated courses in bread, chocolate, sugar, or cake work
- A stackable path from a short certificate to a longer credential
- Production experience, such as a student-run bakery, an internship, or an apprenticeship
- Accreditation that the school itself states for the program
- Clearly published costs
Programs are grouped by strength and are not ranked against each other.
What we do not use
We do not use graduation, job placement, or salary statistics, because schools report them inconsistently and we cannot verify them. We do not rate faculty. Schools cannot pay to be listed or to appear on the Top Baking Schools page.
Keeping information current
Catalogs and tuition schedules change every year. Each profile names the catalog year it is based on, and we update pages as schools publish new information. Always confirm details with the school before applying.
